Take what you can get

Substitute teaching is not glamorous, but I got to a point where I was fine with it. I could tolerate the bad days because they were interspersed with okay days or days with delightful children (that was more rare but it happened at least once a week).

Once I started full time at the state park in May, I spent some "off" days going back to subbing to make extra cash. That didn't last long because working everyday is pretty exhausting. But after having been away, I realized how much it actually sucked. The bad days were enough to completely convince me subbing was over for me for the school year unless I was getting a raise (ha ha). In the meantime, I thought I'd share some artwork that's on my fridge. While some of the kids that created this were not the most well behaved, and I was shocked they made me these because an hour earlier I was yelling at them, I guess you've gotta take what you get in whatever form that praise comes. I certainly won't be getting it from any of the schools or teachers I worked for. Appreciation for substitute teachers is nearly non existent. You have to find the inspiration in the little triumphs you see in student improvement if you return to a school or classroom. Find out when Teacher Appreciation Day is and make sure your children take something in for the teacher. I can't imagine doing that job day in and day out.
