Whidbey Island, a drive in and wonderful volunteers

Last week I partook in my first drive in movie ever. Port Townsend has a theatre in the woods and I went with my friend Joe, Gwen and their friend Chelsea who was in town. Inception and Salt were the movies and I some how I fell asleep during Salt and missed all but the first 20minutes. I also wore 4 layers one of which was my down winter coat, and I also used my sleeping bag, hat and gloves --- summer in PT!

After staying a night at the drive in, I drug myself out of bed and headed off the peninsula for the first time since I have arrived. I met Scott, my roommate of over 4years in DC, at Whidbey Island. Scott is currently staying at his parents house north of Seattle before he moves to Santa Barbara for grad school this fall. We met on Whidbey Island and explored Ft. Casey State Park and then drove to Coupeville, a cute little town a few minutes north on the island. It was a little surreal to see Scott out of the normal context, and it was great seeing a friendly face. Ft. Casey wasn't too thrilling, it has remaining military batteries and barracks, not of the size of Ft. Worden, the state park I live in, but we spent a while roaming around and taking pictures. The lighthouse even opened when we were there so we went up in it to get a view. Port Townsend is so close to Whidbey Island, you can see one from the other shore but you have to take a ferry which is 30minutes. Scott and I ventured for some lunch in downtown Coupeville which was filled with ice cream shops, bakeries, giftshops and many asian themed stores and restaurants.

After action packed days off, I got a cold and have been fighting it off all week while working 7 days in a row. At last, I have today and tomorrow off and it feels good to be sitting in the library with warm sunshine on my face and my feet kicked up on the only library otteman to catch up with all of you.

Of other note from this past week was a volunteer gathering we had at the Science Center to thank all of our wonderful volunteers. We had a potluck dinner a cake was made that had a picture of me and all the AmeriCorps gals and the other intern that started the same day as me, can you see me?
