Since starting my job in November, I've spent much of my time toiling over writing curricula, marketing, and scheduling all things involving the science center's Free Science Classes. It has been really rewarding and satisfying to get to see my first project through from start to finish. I worked long days and many hours gathering all the equipment for the classes, editing the lesson plans over and over, emailing teachers and designing the flyer, and I'm feeling quite proud that it is now reality!
The classes are The Plastics Scientist: Informed Consumer, which is a class about making more thoughtful decisions when we shop, and the second The Plastics Scientist: Beach Sampling, where kids actually sort through beach samples from the Puget Sound, and identify different kinds of plastic. The message for both is make kids and the adults attending think about how much plastic is in our daily life and to be more conscious and thoughtful of overusing it. We discuss ocean currents, the garbage patch, and what plastic is made of, and how it is different from biodegradable products. Okay, enough of tooting my horn, below are pictures of the class materials I assembled.
