A week ago a volunteer at work asked me if I'd seen the fairy circles. Instantly, I imagined people dressed up in fairy outfits holding hands in a circle. This wouldn't have been completely abnormal in PT, seeing that they have a kinetic scupture race and all kinds of crazy parades. Well, I was way off - fairy circles are circles of mushrooms.
It's been raining a lot more these days - it seems once labor day hit, so did fall. There are still beautiful sunny days where you can get away with flip flops and less than 4 layers but the only t-shirt days are over. With the cooler temperatures, has come more rain. I want to preface this with the fact that Port Townsend only gets about 19inches of rain a year, as opposed to Seattle which is almost twice as much - but it's still the NW so we get rain and moisture - hence, loads of mushrooms.
I found the circles in the park and they were not only circles but perfect circles. It reminded me of patterns that have been made in crop fields that people think are from UFO's. I don't know if someone planted these here or this is some kind of natural phenomenon but apparently they've been here for a while. I've been anxiously awaiting a call from my friend about going on a mushroom forey with the Olympic Peninsula Mycological Society, her morel mushroom hunting club, sometime this fall. I've got to get some good rain boots and pants for the fall since part of life here is just getting outdoors and enjoying the scenery, whether or not it's wet.

Be careful about which mushrooms you eat. Some will kill you.
Correction: Morels in the Spring!
