Oregon coast vacation

Taking vacations can be pricey, but since I've started monitoring deal websites, David and I have taken two trips that were quite affordable - the first south to the Washington-Oregon border area.  We each took a day off so that we could leave early Sunday morning and return Tuesday night. I booked a hotel in Seaside for $85 total for two nights! It was actually nice and quaint, just 2.5 blocks from the beach.

We spent most of our time sight seeing at all the Lewis & Clark landmarks, and in the Astoria vicinity, which we both found quite interesting - the Saltworks, Fort Clatsop, Dismal Nitch (you'll see David next to the sign below), Middle Station, Fort Columbia...I think we pretty much did it all. Then we visited Fort Stevens State Park and Cape Disappointment State Parks. At the first, we found the Peter Iredale shipwreck just as the high tide was coming in and were able to run down before it started washing up against it - we pretty much had the beach to ourselves, miles and miles each way, no one could be seen (it was an ugly, rainy, gray day afterall). We climbed the Astoria column to have an awesome view of all of Astoria. Below are some of the first photos of the trip. I'll write more and add more photos in the next posting.

As we drove over the Astoria bridge from Washington to Oregon, to the east, a gigantic rainbow shone - this was a good omen - as it was a fantastically fun trip.

To get to Oregon, you cross over a large bridge, as seen in the next photo, over the Columbia River. One side is Washington state, the next is Oregon. This is right as we got to the Oregon side, we were pretty pumped!

View from Astoria Column, beautiful

This landmark wasn't so exciting, but the name was amusing. It was a location where Lewis & Clark got stuck for nearly a week due to storms, tides and currents -- they couldn't get around the nitch to go further west, hence the dismal name...

The Astoria Column - it has a brief depiction of Oregon's history in drawings
