Day 1: Rockfish Gap

On Day 1, we strapped on our backpacks (40 lbs approximately) and headed off on the trail after a lovely drive to the trailhead compliments of Heather's mom. It was a warm, sunny day and by early afternoon, we'd already reached the first 3-sided shelter. We met our first batch of AT thru hikers on the way to the shelter, Yo-yo, Tweet, Ironman, Eddy and Redfeather. They were all trying to determine whether or not to stay in the shelter or carry on. The weather forecast that night called for heavy thunderstorms. The shelter was small and shelter campsites, not ideal. Heather and I decided to carry on after filling our water bottles at the piped spring. Two miles later we found a terrific spot off the trail and set up camp. We were able to get everything set up, dinner, and into the tent before the storm rolled in. Lightning, rain, thunder, high winds all night. Didn't get much sleep but I anticipated that for the first night anyway. The white noise from the wind did help me sleep a little bit and those 9.5 miles with pack for the first day.
Fresh and clean getting ready to start - packs don't look too bad from this angle...but were back killers
