This past weekend I got to see a familiar face, my dear Amibeth , who I met in DC when we worked at American Rivers together. She is currently in Santa Barbara finishing up her masters and decided to take her spring break to Seattle to stay with friends. I happily made the journey to see her and spend the day there with her friends. We started out having high tea at a cute place in West Seattle and then had a complete reversal of atmosphere later that evening at ROLLER DERBY!
Amibeth and I had some good times in Maryland attending the Demolitian Derby and this experience was another to tack onto the list of great times together. There were four teams just from Seattle playing each other. They didn't let back at all and there were many launchings of girls into the out of bounds, on the floor, into each other, you name it. There was a lot of clothing grabing, elbows flying and dern good skatin! The costumes weren't as outlandish as I was hoping but their names made up for this, just a sampling: Lucinda Pack, Ivana Clobber, Yoko Onoudi'nt, Georgia O'Grief, Sugar and CreamHer, Anya Heels and Slutnik. These gals were tough and I can't ever imagine engaging in this sport since putting on roller skates is scary enough. There were also pretty entertaining and ridiculous male cheerleaders. Anyway, was fun to see complete girlpower in action and with a wonderful friend. It was just what the doctor ordered for my winter blues.

You can never go wrong with watching girls fight each other. Haha.
haha johnny fortune :).
i have entertained the idea in my past life to join roller derby, mainly because i can be such a competitive badass. fortunately for me (and them), i have settled in an area that does not have a team. i guess i'll have to figure out some other way to get those competitive juices going--maybe master's like you!
