History in 'rick

One of the unique things about Frederick is the enormous history of the area. As most know, Frederick is surrounded by and contains it's own civil war battefield. I spent much of my younger days in these areas since my family was part of a living history group. Now, I visit these by choice :) and soak up more of the details and retain the info. Jason and I spent an afternoon going to come of the nearest sights.

Jug Bridge Monument: This was part of an old bridge that went over the Monocacy River, as part of Highway 40 (America's first highway). Ironically, the bridge is gone and this isn't even located near the river anymore, it's in a really random location off a highway, like it was just plopped there. We guessed we were the first to visit it in months?  Rumor has it there is a jug of whiskey or some spirits imbedded in the monument.

New Jersey Monument: A statue errected when the last survivors of the Civil War gathered...early 1900s, I forget, but the field it overlooks is pretty.

I forget the name of this home but this was one of several that was in the midst of the Monocacy Battle. Learning about the families that were in them and the events preceding the battle and during are pretty interesting. You can't go in and they're a little eery to peer in, old drawings on the walls, many have structures to hold up the floors.

The house with the red door behind us used to be a men's store, selling suits, etc. It was built in the early 1800's and still has the store front windows. It's located a block off Market Street (Main Street) because it catered to African American men, who weren't allowed to go into the stores on Market Street at that time. This is also our place! We didn't have a photo in front of our place and we still need to have someone take a better photo of us from across the street so we don't have to do a selfie. That's our red door. We're only on the bottom floor, top is our neighbors. I'll take a video soon.
